Ministry of Homeland Protection under Trump exacerbates immigration controls. Even forest workers during a fire protection mission were checked and two were arrested.
The Trump government is sharply against illegal migration, with an absurd incident this week. Of all things, two firefighters were set on Thursday with a fire protection mission. They are said to have entered the USA illegally.
Forest workers of a private company
In an official statement, it was said that the contracts with two private fire service companies were terminated after “the conclusion of a criminal investigation by the Bureau of Land Management”.
According to the authorities, the raid was carried out in order to check the compliance with immigration laws for state -commissioned operations. According to this, federal officials checked the personal details of 44 members of a private fire brigade company. Two were arrested.
The men were deployed on the Olympic Peninsula, where they fought a forest fire. They were not directly busy with extinguishing work, but acted as forest workers who were supposed to beat a wooden lane to reduce danger. The forest fire west of Seattle had devastated almost 9,000 acres of land. The fire, which had been raging for several weeks, was considered one of the heaviest in the region.
Disproportionate use
One of the firefighters, Michael Kerwin-Smith, spoke to the “Seattle Times”. He said the group had waited for the foreman as a federal police officer to control the ID cards. The men were held for three hours.
“The people they arrested were really good friends of mine, and one of them was even a role model for me,” said Kerwin-Smith. “I don’t know what you’re going through, but it’s just terrible.” The two people are accused of being illegally in the United States.
According to colleagues, the men were experienced forest workers who had worked in similar missions for years. One of the two is said to have already received an expulsion notice. Both were brought to a prison in Bellingham.
Trump’s approach to migrants
Under President Donald Trump, the Ministry of Homeland has massively tightened the procedure of violations of the immigration laws. These measures are part of an initiative that includes increased controls in work areas such as agriculture and construction. It is at least unusual that Federal border officers make arrest while fighting an active fire.
One of the private companies was Table Rock Forestry Inc. The foreman David Diaz said that nobody from the crew had been arrested by his company. He criticized the fact that the arrested was not given the opportunity to call their families or management in order to inform them about the events. Local civil rights groups criticized the arrests as disproportionate and called for a review of the operational priorities.
