The Federal Foreign Office warns of traveling to Iran due to the intensification of the nuclear dispute. German citizens who are there are said to leave the country.
The Federal Foreign Office warned again before traveling to Iran. At the same time, the Ministry again asked German citizens to leave the country.
The background is to trigger the so-called snapback mechanism due to repeated Iranian violations of the nuclear dispute with Iran and the decision of Germany, France and Great Britain. The German embassy in Tehran can currently only provide consular help, the Ministry said.
Iran had already threatened with consequences
Since Iranian government representatives had threatened with consequences in the past, it cannot be ruled out that German interests and nationals in Iran will be affected by countermeasures, according to the Federal Foreign Office.
The Snapback mechanism serves to be able to prove Iran with sanctions again if his obligations are not complied with as part of the Vienna Atom Deal in 2015. After the agreement is no longer implemented, Tehran criticized this measure as illegitimate.
Risk of arbitrary arrests
In the past, the Federal Foreign Office had repeatedly warned about trips to Iran. The reason for this is persistently high risks of arbitrary arrests and convictions, for example among constructed signs of espionage.
In the recent past, there has been a variety of arbitrary arrests from foreign nationals. Double nationals who, in addition to the Germans also have Iranian citizenship, are particularly at risk.
