Hungary blocks EU declaration on Russian rocket attack

The impact of Russian rockets in addition to the EU representation in Kiev causes outrage in Brussels. However, a planned joint statement by the Member States does not come about.

A joint explanation of all 27 EU countries to convict the latest Russian air strikes on Ukraine failed due to Hungary’s resistance. The EU foreign commissioner Kaja Kallas could therefore only publish the text on behalf of 26 countries.

As a possible main reason for the Hungarian blockade, the promise contained in the explanation is to expand the support of Ukraine in all areas and to accelerate the work on a 19th package with sanctions against Russia. The government in Budapest repeatedly claims that the EU’s punitive measures were more harmful than use.

The Hungarian veto caused a particularly great frustration because the EU representation in Kiev was also severely damaged in the Russian air strikes. The statement stated that the attacks again showed the ruthlessness of the Russian approach and disregard for international law. Entering the life of diplomats and diplomatic personnel is a clear violation of Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
