CDU general secretary Carsten Linnemann wants to reduce the civil service apparatus. It should only be civil servant “where there is a special loyalty relationship with the state”.
In a recent interview, CDU general secretary Carsten Linnemann proposed a comprehensive reform of the civil service. In his opinion, civil servants should be limited to a few areas with sovereign tasks. “We should only be a member of where there is a special loyalty relationship with the state, such as the police, the fire brigade or in other security areas, as well as at finance officers or in customs,” Linnemann told the newspapers of the Funke Mediengruppe. With this measure, the civil service apparatus could be significantly reduced.
Linnemann emphasized that most of the hems are currently taking place in the federal states. Nevertheless, he also sees the need for action in the federal government: “You can start where the federal government is responsible.” He questioned whether the civil servant in the ministries was necessary to date. “I think that is not necessary everywhere,” said the CDU general secretary. He also announced that a total of eight percent of the staff should be saved in the ministries by 2029.
According to current figures from the Federal Statistical Office, there were around 1.7 million civil servants in Germany in mid -2024, which corresponds to about a third of the employees in the public service. The largest group among them are teachers, followed by administrative employees and police officers.
