Russia-Ukraine conflict: Germany on Russia: “shameless breach of international law”

After Russia’s war announcement, the Foreign Minister of Ukraine speaks of a “major invasion”. Germany threatens at the UN Security Council meeting: Russia’s aggression will have an “unprecedented price”.

According to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, Russia has begun a major invasion of Ukraine.

Kremlin chief Vladimir «Putin has just launched a major invasion of Ukraine. Peaceful Ukrainian cities are under attack. This is a war of aggression,” the minister said on Twitter on Thursday.

Germany announced serious consequences against Russia because of the announced invasion of Ukraine. “Russian aggression will have an unprecedented price politically, economically and morally,” said German UN ambassador Antje Leendertse at a short-notice emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.

Russia’s announcement of war against Ukraine is a military escalation “the likes of which we have not seen in Europe for generations,” Leendertse continued. It was a “shameless breach of international law.”

NATO chief condemns Ukraine attack

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg condemned the Russian attack on Ukraine in the strongest possible terms. The “ruthless” attack put “the lives of countless civilians” in danger, Stoltenberg said on Thursday.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres appealed to Moscow. “President Putin, in the name of humanity, bring your troops back to Russia,” Guterres said after an emergency UN Security Council meeting in New York on Wednesday evening (local time). “This conflict must end now.” Guterres spoke of what may be the most serious conflict in Europe in decades and his “saddest day” as UN Secretary-General. The consequences for the global economy are unpredictable. “It is clear to me that this war makes no sense. It violates the principles of the (UN) Charter.”

“You’re going straight to hell, Ambassador”

The Ukrainian ambassador to the UN sharply attacked his Russian counterpart. “We condemn the aggression you are perpetrating against my people. There is no purgatory for war criminals. You’re going straight to hell, ambassador,” Serhiy Kyslytsia told Russian representative Vasily Nebensia during his heated speech at the UN Security Council in New York on Wednesday evening.

Previously, Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin had officially ordered a foreign deployment of the Russian military in the Luhansk and Donetsk regions in the conflict with Ukraine. “I have decided to conduct a special military operation,” Putin said in a televised address on Thursday morning. “Your goal is to protect people who have been subjected to abuse and genocide for eight years.”
