The number of general practitioners has increased in the past ten years. However, there are differences between the federal states.
A family doctor provided an average of more than 1,200 people in 2024. There were sometimes big differences between the federal states, as the Federal Statistical Office announced. In Bremenburg (1,436), Bremen (1,369) and Lower Saxony (1,356), there were an above -average number of people who came to a family doctor in 2024.
In contrast, general practitioners in Bavaria provided an average of 1,114 people – the lowest value nationwide. This was followed by: Hamburg, where there were an average of 1,118 people and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (1,149).
More general practitioners but the same degree of supply
According to the Federal Statistical Office, the density of general practitioners hardly changed nationwide in the past ten years. In 2024 1,264, they provided an average of 1,266 people in 2014.
However, the number of general practitioners rose as a whole. According to data from the Federal Medical Association, there were a total of around 66,100 general practitioners in Germany in 2024 – 3.4 percent more than ten years earlier. Her share of all practicing doctors was 15.1 percent.
Many general practitioners over 60 years
The number of general practitioners has increased in recent years, but that should look different in the future. Because a large part of them will probably be released from professional life in the next few years.
In 2024, according to data from the Federal Medical Association, around 27,000 or almost 41 percent of all general practitioners were 60 years or older. Almost every fifth (18.5 percent) was older than 65 years. Only around 5,100 (7.7 percent) were younger than 40 years.
The proportion of at least 60-year-old family doctors in Rhineland-Palatinate (48.0 percent), in Saarland (46.2 percent) and in Bremen (45.4 percent) is particularly high. On the other hand, the proportion of this age group in Thuringia (31.5 percent), Saxony-Anhalt (33.1 percent) and in Saxony (33.2 percent) was the lowest.
