India and Russia maintain close relationships despite the Ukraine war. Vladimir Putin and Narendra Modi also demonstrate this physically at the summit in China.
In China, a number of prominent heads of state and government meet to form a counterpoint to the West. China’s head of state XI Jinping invited to the Shanghaier Organization for Cooperation (SOZ).
Russia’s President Putin in particular and the Indian Prime Minister Modi demonstrated connection – not only verbally, but also physically. Before the opening ceremony, both walked hand through the halls. In particular, modes did not seem to have inhibitions to show himself publicly with the politician who is outlawed in many parts of the world due to the Russian war of aggression.

The Indian Prime Minister posted pictures of an intimate hug between him and Putin and a photo that shows him together with the Russian president in the car on the way to bilateral conversations. “It is always a pleasure to meet President Putin,” wrote Modi.
India’s prime minister emphasizes close relationship with Vladimir Putin and Russia
The day before, Modi had called the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj. “We exchanged information about the ongoing conflict, his humanitarian aspect and the efforts to restore peace and stability,” he wrote. “India fully supports all efforts in this direction.” So far, India has not convicted Russia’s invasion and instead offered itself as an intermediary.
Modi wants to stick to close relationships with Russia despite the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. “Even in the most difficult situations, India and Russia were always side side,” he said after the conversations with Putin. “Our close cooperation is not only important for the people of both countries, but also for worldwide peace, stability and prosperity.” Putin described the Indian Prime Minister as a “friend” and praised the decades of cooperation between the two countries.
At the summit in Tinjan, Putin once again accused the West of being responsible for the war in Ukraine. He emphasized that the world needed a “system that replaces the outdated Eurocentric and Euro-Atlantic models” and that the interests of as many countries take into account as possible.
