On a trip Ursula from the Leyens to Bulgaria, an incident occurred: her plane suffered a massive GPS disorder-a Russian attack is suspected behind it.
An aircraft with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on board is presumably the goal of a deliberate disturbance of the satellite-based navigation system GPS by Russia.
“We can confirm that there was GPS jamming,” said a spokeswoman for the European Commission in Brussels about the incident on Sunday in Bulgaria. Accordingly, the Bulgarian authorities suspect that the disorder was carried out by Russia. The reception of the satellite signal is disturbed during GPS jamming.
According to the spokeswoman, the incident ended lightly. In the end, the aircraft with von der Leyen ended up safely.
Ursula von der Leyen on the way to Plowdiw
According to a report by the “Financial Times”, the jet had to stay in the air for about an hour longer than planned due to the disturbance. Then the pilot made the decision to land manually using analog cards in the city of Plowdiw, it said.
Plowdiw is the second largest Bulgarian city. The airport there is mainly used by low-cost airlines and for charter flights.
The spokeswoman for the EU Commission initially did not want to comment on details. She only generally added to the incident that the EU Commission is aware that threats and intimidation were a regular part of Russia’s hostile approach. However, incidents like this only strengthened the determination of expanding the defense skills and strengthening support for Ukraine.
Ursula von der Leyen has visited several countries in the north and east of the EU in the past few days. In Bulgaria, on Sunday, she had a meeting with Prime Minister Rossen Scheljaskow on the topics of European security and defense.
