In the federal budget, billions will soon be missing. Is a difficult austerity course enough? The Chancellor has opposed tax increases – but now there are other ideas from union series.

The debate about possible additional tax revenue to plug in household holes continues even after a fundamental cancellation of Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), even in the ranks of the Union. The chairman of the Christian Democratic Working (CDA), Dennis Radtke, told the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”: “For reasons of justice, we urgently need to close the large loopholes in inheritance tax.”

The CDU politician also generally suggested: “The rich tax could increase a little, the medium-sized stauch in the tariff, the normal earner is particularly stressed, are melted.” Radtke added that this was discussed in detail when developing the new CDU principle.

Chancellor refers to the coalition agreement

Merz had only rejected considerations on tax increases at the weekend. In the coalition agreement, the Union and the SPD agreed that taxes would not be increased, said the CDU chairman in the “Berlin directly summer interview” of the ZDF. “This coalition agreement applies.”

Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD) had not ruled out that taxes could be increased for top earners and the wealthy in order to close a foreseeable gap of more than 30 billion euros in budget 2027. “No option is taken off the table,” he made it clear. This has been discussed for a few weeks.

So far, the tips from the CDU and CSU strictly reject this. However, the CDU budget politician Andreas Mattfeldt had already said in the “Bild” newspaper: “I think it is personally justifiable to increase the so-called rich tax-but only if necessary social reforms are implemented in return.”
