He was the Greens, Minister of Economics and Chancellor candidate. Now Robert Habeck has given up his Bundestag mandate. But a comeback is not excluded.

At times he was the most popular politician in the country. In short it even looked like Robert Habeck could be the first green chancellor. But when Minister of Economics in the traffic light coalition, he lost a rapid look because of the heating law. This was followed by loss of votes in the early Bundestag election and the waiver of offices in the party and faction. Now the 56-year-old has also returned his Bundestag mandate. However, he has not completely ruled out a return to politics.

The survey shows how much the vice-chancellor of the traffic light coalition is still polarized: 90 percent of the Greens supporters would welcome a comeback of Habeck after a few years, but only three percent of the AfD voters. Approval predominates with the supporters of the SPD (45 percent) and the left (53 percent). In the voters of the CDU/CSU, 61 percent are against a return, but at least 28 percent. The difference from gender is also striking: 42 percent of women would like a comeback, but only 28 percent of men.

With interviews for his retreat, Habeck had made headlines again. Among other things, he had referred to the Bundestag president Julia Klöckner (CDU) as the “misliteration” and accused Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) “fetish -like sausage food”.

The data was collected by the market and opinion research institute Forsa for the Stern and RTL Germany on August 28 and 29. Database: 1007 respondents. Statistical fault tolerance: +/- 3 percentage points. This means that the survey is representative
