Russia’s attack on Ukraine affects international air travel. Airplanes make a wide berth around the crisis area.
Ukraine has been under fire since early morning. Rockets are falling at several locations, and Russian ground troops have now invaded Ukraine at several borders. The conflict also affects international air travel. The Ukrainian aviation authority closed the airspace over Kiev, Dnipro, Odeesa, Simferopol and Lviv early Thursday morning. The European aviation authority EASA had warned civilian aircraft not to fly near the Ukrainian border in the morning. According to CNN, the authority warned that there was a “high risk” of becoming the target of attacks.
In 2014, a plane was shot down over Ukraine
A look at the Flightradar24.com portal shows that the warnings are being taken seriously. The airspace over and around Ukraine is deserted, and there are hardly any planes in western Russia and Belarus. In July 2014, four months after the annexation of Crimea, a Dutch KLM passenger plane was shot down in eastern Ukraine. 298 people lost their lives, and the incident has not been clarified to this day. The plane had been hit by a rocket in eastern Ukraine, where Donetsk and Luhansk had just been declared separatist areas. A few days before the accident, Europol had asked Ukraine to block airspace in eastern Ukraine.
