The EU Commission President of the Leyen provides a statement to send European soldiers to Ukraine after an armistice for irritation – also with the Chancellor.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz has emphasized that the military support of Ukraine is a matter for the Member States in the so-called coalition of the willing and not the EU Commission. “The European Union is not responsible for this,” said the CDU chairman in an interview for the Sat.1 show “: Newstime”.
In doing so, he reacted to statements by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen (CDU), who, according to “Financial Times”, spoke of precise plans for sending soil troops to Ukraine after an armistice. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) had already sharply criticized them on Monday.
Merz made it clear that such concrete plans for a military operation “do not exist in Germany”. Long -term security guarantees can only be decided if there is an armistice or a peace agreement.
Even under these conditions, however, he would put the use of German soldiers “under considerable reservations”, says Merz. “We have already said elsewhere, the German Bundestag has to agree.” It also depends on what type of agreement there is with Russia. “There are still many, many hurdles in the way, possibly for a long time.”
This Thursday there will be a meeting of the so -called coalition of the willing, which belongs to around 30 countries, in Paris. Some participants will switch on by video. The consultations should be about security guarantees for Ukraine after a ceasefire.
