The US government had accused several universities in spring to do too little against anti -Semitism – and wanted to deny funding. That has gone too far, a federal judge says.
In the dispute with the Elite University Harvard on funding, the US government under Donald Trump suffered a defeat. A federal court decided that the billion -dollar funding could not simply have been frozen and withdrawn, as can be seen from a corresponding court document. The money must be released again.
The US government had accused several universities of a left-liberal orientation and inadequate measures against anti-Semitism. Harvard was then frozen and withdrawn funds, the elite university complained. According to the court document, it was almost $ 2.2 billion (just under 1.9 billion euros).
Judge Allison Burroughs found that Harvard could have actually done more against anti -Semitism. “However, there is hardly a connection between the research projects and anti -Semitism affected by the deletion of funding,” she wrote. Instead, it is a “targeted, ideologically motivated attack on the leading universities” in the United States.
