Coalition wants upswing and reforms

After a summer with a lot of argument, the Union and SPD want to concentrate on things that affect millions of people – the economy and social. New top meetings are targeted.

According to the will of the government coalition in autumn, top meetings with industry and quick social reforms should set the course for economic recovery in Germany. At the same time, Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), CSU boss Markus Söder and the SPD chairman Bärbel Bas and Lars Klingbeil promised constructive interaction with each other after a coalition committee in Berlin.

In view of a lot of internal disputes in the first 100 days, the four party leader from the CDU, CSU and SPD admitted errors. Now, according to Söder’s words “after the summer depression”, the coalition wants to find a “new autumn force”. The tips did not present a list of several projects, as expected by some in the coalition, in the evening.

Merz is a speed of citizenship

Merz and BAS had had an exchange of blows to social costs in the past few days. Now both common goals emphasized. Merz relies on a reform of the citizens’ allowance prepared by BAS as Minister of Social Affairs, for which further consultations of the four black and red party leader are planned. “I assume that we will arrange the most important cornerstones for such a reform this year, so that there will be a reform of the so -called civil allowance quickly,” said the Chancellor.

Merz emphasized once again that the performance would then become a “new basic security”. Abuse should be brought more under control. People should go to the labor market more and to return there.

How BAS saves itself at the social

Basically, BAS reacted to Merz ‘Citizens’ Fall Saving of five billion euros from the previous day. “I always dampen the expectations.” Because: “It depends on the fact that the economy attracts.”

The SPD leader justified why the economic upswing hoped for by the coalition would also defuse the debate about savings in social. “If we get 100,000 more in the works, it will make one to two billion, which we also save,” said Bas. Incidentally, she never contradicted the need for reform in the civil allowance. “You don’t have to wear me here either.”

The day before the top meeting in the Chancellery, Merz Bas had criticized in an interview because she had called the debate about the costs of the social state “Bullshit”. While Merz, according to several statements of the past few days, is no longer affordable, BAS had repeatedly warned of high hopes for savings by reforms. In a conciliatory dinner the day before the coalition committee, BAS and Merz had talked well and demolished a joint objective, both reported – according to Bas “with two beer”.

Merz expressly confessed to the welfare state afterwards: “We don’t want to grind him, we don’t want to abolish him, we don’t want to shorten him,” he said. “We want to get it in its most important functions.”

Greens boss Franziska Brantner accused Merz of doing something with the “supposedly new basic security”. It should be feared that it is only a matter of blaming people in need of their situation instead of giving them real chances, she told the Funke media group newspapers.

Top meetings with industry

In keeping with the priority of BAS, the coalitioners put their efforts for the industrial location of Germany in the foreground. The Chancellor invites you to two top meetings. For a summit with the battered steel industry in the Chancellery, the goal was “that we will receive steel production in Germany in the long run,” as Merz said. You want to discuss this with the producers. Due to hard competition, especially from Asia, high energy prices and the economic weakness, the German steel industry had recently made significantly less steel. Added to the tariffs of US President Donald Trump.

Merz also wants to invite you to an industrial policy dialogue for the future of the battered automotive industry. Not only the large manufacturers would have to struggle, the supplier industry also has a lot of suffering at the moment. Söder emphasized that one was not ready to leave China or other automotive markets to the future.

Household: Klingbeil does not want a public dispute

For the time being, the question remains unresolved how the Union and the SPD want to stuff the 30 billion hole in the Federal budget in 2027. Finance Minister Klingbeil does not want to make the negotiations to be a test. “I want to refrain from the fact that we will celebrate coalition sessions in the normal budget creation procedure for 2027 and public disputes if there should be one or the other,” he said.

Merz emphasized that all three partners were clear about the dimension of the task. It is not only about the federal budget in 2027, but also about the budget 2028 and 2029. Klingbeil said that the coalition must now present an overall package as soon as possible, which gives an answer to how the gap should be closed. “It will go fair,” emphasized Klingbeil. However, it was also clear that “we will all certainly be a bit of a difference in the negotiations for the household 2027”.

Left criticizes lack of planning

Left-wing parliamentary group leader Heidi Reichinnek accused the coalition of planning without planning. “This forced harmony show could not hide the fact that the coalition has no plan on how it wants to stuff the foreseeable huge holes in the households,” Reichinnek told the newspapers of the Funke media group.
