Soldiers – partly with weapons – shape the cityscape in Washington. The use is controversial – and now ends up in court.
The Federal District Washington is complaining about the controversial commitment of national guards in the US capital against the government of US President Donald Trump. “Armed soldiers should not control American citizens on American soil,” said the Federal Prosecutor of the Federal District, Brian Schwalb, in a statement on the complaint on platform X. He spoke of a “forced military occupation” that violated local autonomy.
National Guard should not take over any police tasks
Schwalb also sees a danger to the capital’s economy, for example for restaurants, hotels and tourism. According to him, more than 2,200 national guards from seven US states and the federal district on the streets of Washington are currently on the road.
He argues in the lawsuit that military units such as the national guard, according to applicable law, are not allowed to take over any police tasks such as arrests within the United States. Just a few days ago, a judge in California came to the same conclusion.
Not the first complaint of the Federal District Washington
The Attorney General of the Federal District Washington had already brought a lawsuit against the Trump government in the mid-past month. The government had acted illegally and abused its powers when the police in Washington had put it under federal control, argued at the time.
A few days earlier, Trump had announced that it would use the national guard in Washington and put the city of the city under federal control.
