France wants to recognize a state of Palestine. In Israel, this is met with sharp criticism. President Macron is currently officially undesirable as a visitor.
Because of the planned recognition of a Palestinian state by Paris, Israel has rejected a possible visit by France President Emmanuel Macron. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said in a phone call with his French counterpart Jean-Noël Barrot that he saw “no space” for such a visit as long as France was in advance, his ministry said. Official plans for a possible visit to Macron in Israel were not known.
In the conversation, Saar asked to rethink the recognition of a Palestinian state, it said. The French initiative undermine the stability in the Middle East and a shame of Israel’s national and security interests, said Saar, according to the message. He accused France of taking “a number of anti -Israeli steps and positions” recently.
Several states, including France, Canada and Australia, want to recognize a Palestinian state in September. Macron had announced this for his country in July, the Israeli government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned this sharply.
