Asylum applications from Afghanistan increase after ECJ decision

Most asylum applications in Germany have so far come from people from Afghanistan this year. What a court ruling from October has to do with it.

People from Afghanistan have by far the most asylum applications in Germany. As the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) reports, the authority received a total of 104,012 asylum applications between the beginning of January and the end of August, of which 78,246 applications were concerned who applied for protection for the first time in Germany.

According to the information, people from Afghanistan made 14,865 asylum applications and 15,914 subsequent applications. Supporting seekers are particularly concerned if the legal situation has changed in their favor if there are new evidence that prove their worthy of protection, or if the situation in the country of origin has deteriorated.

Massive restrictions for women in Afghanistan

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) had found last October that some of the discriminatory measures against women imposed in Afghanistan were an act of persecution. To examine an individual asylum application of Afghan women, it is therefore sufficient that EU member countries only took their nationality and gender into account.

According to the BAMF, this should be a reason why 9,139 follow -up applications from women from Afghanistan were made in the first eight months of this year.

Fewer applications than in the previous month

The number of asylum applications fell by 5.9 percent in August to 7,803 income. Last year, the number of people who for the first time submitted an asylum application in Germany were significantly higher. Around 18,427, asylum applications were received around August 2024.

As in July of this year, Afghanistan was the main country of origin of people who applied for protection in Germany with 1,968 initial yields, followed by Syria with 1,370 arrival. Third place on the list of the most important countries of origin took Turkey (848 first applications).
