War in Ukraine: Scholz warns Russia of “tough sanctions”

Watch the video: Chancellor Scholz announces tough sanctions.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz convened the security cabinet on Thursday to discuss the situation in Ukraine after the Russian attack. “There is no justification for any of this. This is Putin’s war. In a telephone call this morning, I said to the Ukrainian President Zelensky: In these difficult hours, we extend our full solidarity to Ukraine and to her and her citizens.” Scholz announced further steps against Russia: “As the next step, we will decide on further tough sanctions against Russia today in close consultation with our international partners in NATO and in the European Union. It is good that we have carefully prepared this. Goal sanctions is to make it clear to the Russian leadership that they are paying a bitter price for this aggression. […] Allow me to say a word to our NATO allies in Eastern Europe, in Poland, in Romania and in the Baltic States. I would like to expressly assure you: We understand your concerns in view of this development only too well. We will stand by you. Germany stands by NATO’s duty of assistance. “The security cabinet, an informal body of the federal government, advises on questions of internal and external security. In addition to the federal chancellor, the interior, foreign and defense ministers as well as high-ranking representatives of the secret services and other security authorities usually come together.
