War in Ukraine: Follow the special broadcast of RTL and ntv live now

Western fears have come true: Russia has invaded Ukraine, declaring war. In an RTL/ntv special on the Ukraine crisis, our reporters shed light on what is happening and report on the spot.

It was in the offing, now it has become reality: Russia has invaded Ukraine. In Germany, the attack caused horror. But what’s next on site? In a special broadcast, reporters from Ukraine report on what is happening.

A “blatant breach of international law”

Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) spoke on Thursday in Berlin of a “blatant breach of international law”. At the same time, the federal government announced severe sanctions in coordination with the allies.

The Russian attack “cannot be justified by anything,” emphasized Scholz. “Russia must stop this military action immediately,” he continued. The Chancellor phoned the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj in the morning and assured him “Germany’s full solidarity in this difficult hour,” as government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said afterwards.

Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) announced a “package with the most massive sanctions against Russia”. The Western community of states has already prepared this package and will now “get it under way” after the Russian attack on Ukraine, she said in Berlin.

“We woke up today in a different world. After months of preparation, lies and propaganda,” Russian President Vladimir Putin decided to “follow his threats with terrible deeds,” Baerbock said. For the Russians, the name of their country is now linked “for decades to the unscrupulous murder of their brothers and sisters in Ukraine.”

German citizens should leave Ukraine as soon as possible

The federal government again “urgently” called on the Germans who were still in Ukraine to leave the country. If this is not possible because of the fighting, they should remain “in a protected place” for the time being. According to Baerbock, German diplomats who were still in Kiev had already been evacuated from there shortly before the invasion.

In Berlin, the crisis team was convened in the Foreign Office. In the morning, the security cabinet, which also includes the ministers for internal and external security and the head of the chancellery, Wolfgang Schmidt (SPD), met under the leadership of Scholz.
