Corona Commission should “understand, do not judge”

Crisis management in pandemic and the consequences have triggered violent controversy. Now there is also a large evaluation in parliament at the federal level – with what perspective?

The designated chairman of the Bundestag’s Corona Pandemie, Franziska Hoppermann, relies on a comprehensive, honest and balanced reappraisal of the crisis years. “We want to understand, do not judge,” said the CDU member of the German Press Agency before the constituent meeting on Monday. “We want to critically question decisions and processes that may have made sense in the light of time and identify mistakes. But we also want to see what was good.”

Hoppermann emphasized: “It is crucial that we are better prepared for future comparable situations and learn from that time and their decisions.” Pandemic had given the country one of the biggest challenges in the post -war period. “Especially in an international comparison, it can be stated that Germany has come through this crisis well – economical and health. To believe that this time does not have any teachings for us would be negligent and irresponsible.”

Beast with MPs and experts

Bundestag president Julia Klöckner (CDU) is also expected for the constituent meeting of the Commission. The Bundestag had decided in July with a majority of Union, SPD, Greens and Left. In addition to 14 MPs, 14 experts should also belong to the committee. The Commission is to submit a report to the Bundestag by mid -2027 with recommendations for future crises. The acute corona pandemic had started in 2020, the last nationwide everyday conditions ended in Easter 2023.

Hoppermann said state action during this time and the effects on society should now be dealt with intensively. The triad of critical questioning, analysis and forward -looking pulling of teachings makes the work of the Commission so challenging and, above all, irreplaceable for the social handling of pandemic. She advocated looking for a consensus instead of party dispute.

“Go to the future as a society”

It is particularly important not only to stay in the political circle, said Hoppermann. Therefore, numerous external experts should not only be heard, but 14 selected people from different areas should be an equal part of the Commission. “Together we will draw a comprehensive, honest and balanced picture of the time – so that we can draw the right conclusions and be able to go into the future as a society.” In the past parliamentary term, a large evaluation of the measures and restrictions at the federal level had not come about.
