Selenskyj: Putin puts world on a test – new sanctions?

Russia has attacked goals in Ukraine with a record number of drones. The Ukrainian President Selenskyj expects a reaction in the world. Is something going on in Washington at the beginning of the week?

After the Russian wave of attack against his country with a record number of drones, the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj demands a reaction from the global community. Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin puts the world on the rehearsal and wants to see whether it accepts such attacks and thus ceases to find it, said Selenskyj in the evening. U.S. President Donald Trump is ready for new Russia sanctions and announced another conversation with Putin in the next few days.

A meeting in Washington is planned today: Several European civil servants led by the EU sanctions David O’Sullivan are guests in the US Ministry of Finance to discuss various forms of economic pressure on Russia-including new sanctions, as a spokesman for the EU Commission of the German Press Agency confirmed.

Unprecedented drone attack on Ukrainian cities

Ukraine has been fighting against the Russian invasion with western support for more than three and a half years. According to the Air Force in Kiev, the attackers used more than 800 fight drones on the night of Sunday – a record. In addition, marching aircraft and rockets were fired at Ukrainian goals. For the first time, an attack also hit the main government in the Ukrainian capital. According to the authorities, four people were killed and dozens were injured.

Selenskyj said that Russia tries to inflict pain in pain and to carry out brazen strokes. This must be countered with “sanctions against Russia, people associated with Russia and strong tariffs and other trade restrictions for Russia”. “Your losses must be noticeable,” said the President.

New sanctions against Russia in conversation

When asked by a journalist at the White House, US President Trump replied whether he was ready to usher in the second phase of sanctions against Moscow: “Yes, that’s me.” The Republican said nothing more. It remained unclear whether and when new sanctions are actually imposed. Trump had indicated days ago that in addition to the recently imposed punitive tariffs in the United States against India, there were further plans for business with Russia.

The USA views sanctions as a means of putting Kremlin chief Putin under pressure and thus getting a peace solution in the Ukraine War. So far, Trump’s efforts have been unsuccessful. Putin is accused of delaying a direct meeting with the Ukrainian head of state Selenskyj.

Trump said to journalists that he planned “very soon” to talk to Putin, “in the next few days”. He was “not happy” about the whole situation, Trump said against the background of the ongoing fights and the loss of human life. However, the US President confirmed with a view to possible peace solutions: “We will do it.”

Customs against India due to oil transactions with Moscow

Trump had threatened tariffs against Russia’s trading partners of around 100 percent in mid -July. But these did not come to this extent at least: since last week, the United States has been raising additional tariffs of 25 percent due to the oil transactions in the most populous country with Russia. So far, India is the only trading partner of Russia that the United States deals with punitive tariffs in the context of the Ukraine war.

US government calls for the EU support

US Finance Minister Scott Bessent said on the TV station NBC News: “We are ready to increase the pressure on Russia, but we need the support of our European partners.” If the United States and the EU imposed interventions and other sanctions – i.e. insert tariffs for countries that buy Russian oil – will completely collapse the Russian economy. Putin will bring that to the negotiating table.

Criticism of European countries

Trump is said to have recently held their oil transactions with Russia to European countries. In a phone call with the Europeans, the Republican asked to end the oil transactions with the help of which Russia finances his war against Ukraine-as the US news portal “Axios” and the TV broadcaster CNN reported on the White House. In addition, Trump asked them to put pressure on the Chinese government, which has returned Russia in the Ukraine War.

According to EU information, the oil transactions in Europe have decreased with Russia in recent years. However, they did not come to a standstill. The Russian oil pipeline druschba continues to transport oil towards Hungary and Slovakia.

After the Russian attack on Ukraine in 2022, the EU imposed extensive import bans for Russian energy sources such as coal and oil. However, these bans do not extend to petroleum, which is transported via pipelines.
