War in Ukraine: Gerhard Schröder calls for an end to it “as soon as possible”.

He is considered a confidante of Russian President Vladimir Putin and lobbies for Russian energy companies. Former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder is now calling for an end to the war in Ukraine.

Former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder is calling on the Russian government to end its war in Ukraine “as quickly as possible”. “Even Russia’s security interests do not justify the use of military means”.

Schröder writes that in recent years there have been “mistakes and omissions in the relationship between the West and Russia” on “both sides”. The SPD politician was not specific in his statement.

Gerhard Schröder calls for dialogue in the Ukraine war

In his contribution, the 77-year-old called for “not to completely sever the remaining political, economic and civil society ties that exist between Europe and Russia”. This is the basis for a dialogue between Russia and the West on peace in Europe.

After his time as Federal Chancellor (1998 to 2005), Gerhard Schröder worked as a lobbyist for the Russian energy industry. Among other things, he is chairman of the supervisory board of the state gas company “Rosneft” and the Baltic Sea pipeline operator “Nord Stream”. Most recently he was nominated for the supervisory board of the “Gazprom” concern. With their profits, the state-owned companies indirectly finance part of the Russian war machine.

The former chancellor is also considered a confidante of Russian President Vladimir Putin and a supporter of his previous policies. Before the Russian army invaded the neighboring country in violation of international law, he had recently criticized, among other things, Ukraine’s demands for arms deliveries as “saber rattling”. Large parts of his party, including Chancellor Olaf Scholz, then distanced themselves from their former chairman.
