Spain announces arms embargo against Israel

Spain is one of the sharpest critics of Israeli military mission in Gaza. Now Madrid announces new specific steps that are supposed to work on Israel and the international community.

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez imposes a weapon embargo against Israel. This is part of an action plan that, according to him, should help “stop the genocide in Gaza”.

A total of nine measures that are supposed to take effect are also an entry ban for people who are directly involved in the “massacre”. “Spain will be on the right side of history,” said Sánchez.

Further steps include increased humanitarian aid for Gaza, additional funds for the UN aid work for Palestine refugees (UNRWA) and an import ban for products from Israeli settlements. One wants to support the Palestinian population, but also ensure that those responsible for the attacks on the civilian population are pursued.

Sánchez said: “This is no longer a defense, it is not even an attack, it is the extermination of a defenseless people.” He also complained what he described as “indifference” and “complicity” of the international community with the government of Israel.

The “Convention on the Control and Punishment of the Murder” of the United Nations (UN) describes the targeted persecution of population groups, which differ from others by language, religion and tradition – with the aim of destroying this group in whole or in part. South Africa has filed a lawsuit at the International Court of Justice in the Haag on the accusation of violating the Völkermurd Convention in the Gaza Strip. The main procedure for the accusation of genocide will take years.

Israel rejects the accusation of a genocide at the Palestinians and accuses the Hamas terrorist organization to systematically abuse the civilian population as a human protective shield.

Sánchez also condemns the Hamas attacks

In an explanation without questioning, he emphasized: “In the course of history, the Jewish people have suffered countless persecution and injustices, including the worst of everyone, the Holocaust. After so much suffering, it deserves to have its own state and feel safe in it.”

The government and society in Spain therefore “convicted the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, 2023. “And we will always support Israel’s right to existence,” said the socialist politician. “But the one is to protect your own country and your own society, and to bomb something completely different to bomb hospitals and let innocent girls and boys starve to death.”
