With Annalena Baerbock advertises colorful videos for international cooperation. In her new role, however, she has to react to some crises-and to US President Donald Trump.
Annalena Baerbock buys a bag, drives through New York in the yellow taxi and gets out of the car with high heels: With good mood videos and allusions to the cult series “Sex and the City”, the Green politician advertises Instagram for attention for the 80th UN General Assembly, which begins on Tuesday and leads the Baerbock as the new president.
Baerbock’s colorful picture world is contrasting to the widespread crisis mood. The planned recognition of a Palestinian state by France and other countries ensures dispute among some of the 193 UN Member States. In addition, US President Donald Trump questions international cooperation in an unprecedented way.
“International cooperation and diplomacy is used more than ever,” says Baerbock in her Bagel video in English-of course with a German accent, because these are used to online users from her time as Foreign Minister, she says.
Does Annalena Baerbock write history?
The new German UN ambassador Ricklef Beutin formulates it in a her own video: “We need cooperation instead of division,” says Beutin, who is actually called “Standing Representative of Germany”. “Germany wants to help make the United Nations of agile, effective and fitter.”
Baerbock as a slogan for her one -year mandate has also spent the same. She wants to use the previously purely protocol presidential post to promote the reform of the United Nations and to help you find the first UN Secretary-General in the 80-year history of the institution.
The question of whether she sees herself as the successor to the outgoing Secretary General António Guterres left Baerbock unanswered in June. The 44-year-old would write history several times: she would not only be the first woman as a UN Secretary General, but also the first German. It would probably also be the youngest when taking office.
More information is likely to be discussed, the Baerbock stops on Tuesday evening German period at the opening of the 80th General Assembly. In the next two weeks there are consultations at ambassador and ministerial level.
Member countries plan recognition of the Palestinian state
A first highlight is expected on September 22nd: Then France and possibly other countries such as Great Britain, Canada and Belgium want to recognize a Palestinian state. Macron officially justifies his move with the commitment “for a fair and permanent peace in the Middle East”.
Israel’s head of government Benjamin Netanyahu, on the other hand, accuses him of a “reward for terror” of the radical Islamic Hamas in the Gaza Strip, he had Macron declared an undesirable person in Israel shortly before the UN conference. Netanyahu should repeat these allegations during his New York appearance. It is planned as part of the so-called “high-ranking debate” of the heads of state and government in the week from September 23.
Germany got into a dilemma through the conflict. The Federal Government’s official wording is therefore “at short notice” she is not planning to recognize a Palestinian state. Whether Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) personally defended this attitude is open. Because of the budget week in the Bundestag at the end of September, it is likely that Merz will be represented by Foreign Minister Johann WadePhul (CDU).
Trump government imposed sanctions against UN representatives
Macron knows a comfortable majority in the United Nations. More than 140 countries worldwide have already recognized a Palestinian state or are planning this. Trump nevertheless dismissed the French initiative as “insignificant”.
The US President is likely to read the Levites in his speech planned for September 23. Trump does not think of multilateralism, as his “America first” policy shows. Trump has repeatedly criticized the UN course and cut funds to a significant extent. His government has also imposed sanctions against high-ranking UN representatives, to whom he accuses hostile attitude towards the USA and Israel.
