France’s Premier Bayrou submits his resignation. The second departure of a premier in a short time also increases the pressure on Macron. The president will have to postpone his focus for the time being.
France’s Prime Minister François Bayrou submitted the resignation of his government after a lost question of trust. Until the successor was nomination, he and his cabinet will remain in office, it said on the official government website.
The Élysée Palace had already announced on Monday evening that President Emmanuel Macron would resign. Macron, who is under pressure on the government case, wants to appoint a successor to Bayrou in the coming days.
Macron in split land in front of difficult prime minister
For Macron head of state, it is important to find a new prime minister who can lead the politically divided country. In the National Assembly, Macron’s liberals, the left warehouse and the right -wing national around Marine Le Pen face three big blocks. None of them have their own majority. Governing in cross -warehouse coalitions is not used to France. The starting point is correspondingly tricky.
Despite numerous international crises, Macron will probably withdraw some of the international stage. For him, it is initially said: Find a new head of government in a hurry before the mood heats up too much in terms of domestic policy and he gets too much into the line of fire. There is a great protest in France on Wednesday, and strikes have been announced in the coming week.
In theory, Macron also remained a second option: he could dissolve the National Assembly and call out new elections, as he had done it after the flap of his center camp in the European election last year.
However, the president had subsequently indicated several times to prevent a new resolution if possible. It also speaks against this possibility that he also announced shortly after the question of trust to appoint a new head of government in a few days. However, if the search for a premier does not succeed, this would still be an option to try to get out of the processed situation.
Two failed prime minister in a short time – pressure on Macron
Even if Macron is not directly affected by the resignation of the government as head of state, the step for him is also a slump. With Bayrou, the second prime minister has to vacate its post within a good year.
Michel Barnier’s government had been plunged in office by the opposition in December with a vote of no confidence after less than three months. Bayrou ruled for almost nine months. The failure of the two also harms the reputation of Macron, who appoints the Premier.
The opposition’s criticism of the head of state is likely to increase again. Especially the right -wing nationals around Le Pen feels a chance to expand their power in the country. They are pushing for a new election of the National Assembly. The Altlinke LFI wants to try to discontinue Macron right away and to bring about an early presidential election. However, it is unlikely that this succeeds.
Actually, the choice is only planned for 2027. Many moderate fears that this time Marine Le Pen wins, even if it is not yet clear because of an ongoing judicial procedure whether it will be able to run at all.
Macron himself cannot compete again after two terms of 2027. The president absolutely wants to prevent the Élysée to hand over to the right -wing national. He will also have the vote in mind when it decides how it should continue in France.
Fault France needs new household
France’s debt burden is also a not insignificant factor. The highly indebted country must urgently consolidate its austerity course and adopt a household for the coming year. If the hanging game lasts too long, the trust in the markets also threatens to decrease, which would put a strain on French finances. In Brussels you also look at the budget situation. The European Commission had already initiated criminal proceedings last year for excessive debt and fears that the situation could continue to worsen in view of the political situation. The hanging section could be a burden for the euro zone.
It is still unclear who Macron could rely on to lead France out of the crisis. Minister of defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu deals with Macron, as promising candidates. The names of Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin, Minister of Labor and Health Catherine Vautrin or Finance and Economic Minister éric Lombard also fell.
Macron will probably try to find a candidate who is accepted by both the socialists and the conservative républicains in order to have the stable government. It remains to be seen whether the balancing act between the traditional camps can succeed. In Berlin, to which Paris recently moved back closer, immediate effects of the domestic political crisis in France are not expected to work on the collaboration between the two countries.
