When the captain of the “Sea Story” tries to navigate his in need of luxury yacht through endless black, Mathias Baier, Danilo Rößger and 28 other guests in their cabins lie in restless sleep. A strong wind from northwest presses the ship into a threatening side position, heavy furniture slides on the decks.
It is Monday, November 25, 2024, shortly before three in the morning. The ship drives on the Red Sea, 24 degrees and 56 minutes north width and 35 degrees and 10 minutes east length, around 20 kilometers off the Egyptian coast.
At that time, the radar of the coast guard shows no other ship in this area of the sea. The weather services and the authorities have warned of storms. The captain of the “Sea Story” spoke on the phone until late in the evening, he and his crew pursued weather forecasts and finally decided to start the trip to some of the most famous diving sites in the world as planned.
But now, with a course on Sha’ab Sataya, the ship is out of control. The yacht, 44 meters long, nine meters wide and four decks up, capsized. With the force of hundreds of tons, it strikes hard on the water surface with the right side. Baier is thrown through his cabin and lands on Rößger’s bed. You hear the deafening clink of splintering glass. An alarm siren sends a shrill howling into the night. Only seconds later the alarm falls silent, the light fails, becomes infinitely dark, and water floods flood.
They transform the “Sea Story” into a lightless lock between life and death.
