Union and SPD have agreed to think about a reform of the debt brake. As of today, a commission is working on suggestions. But not everyone in the coalition is ambitious.
The commission used by the Federal Government to reform the debt brake officially begins with its work today. Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD) also wants to participate in the constituent meeting in the morning. The 15-member working group should make proposals for modernization of the debt rule anchored in the Basic Law by the end of the year. This limits the federal freedom to take up new loans.
According to the Ministry of Finance, the Commission should permanently enable additional investments in Germany. It is headed together by the former Lower Saxony Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD), the former Lower Saxony finance minister Reinhold Hilbers (CDU) and the former Secretary of Education Stefan Müller (CSU).
The SPD in particular has long been committed to a reform of the debt brake. However, there are doubts in the Union. Union faction vice Mathias Middelberg does not consider major changes to be necessary. “In the long run, we have to be clear, we have to be clear, not the solution,” said the politician in the of “Politico”. He currently does not consider further changes to the debt rule. “But that does not mean that you can’t get to other assessments in good expert talks,” said Middelberg.
