The Belarusian head of state has been trying to commute between East and West for decades to consolidate his power. Many of his political opponents are released in a deal with the USA.
The Belarusian ruler Alexander Lukaschenko released and deported more than 50 political prisoners after negotiations with the United States. “52 prisoners have surely crossed the Lithuanian border from Belarus today and left barbed wire, barred windows and constant fear behind,” said Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda on the platform X. There are also six Lithuanians among the released. Nauseda thanked the USA for its placements.
According to Minsk, there are 14 foreigners among those released: from Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Germany, France and Great Britain.
Lukaschenko had previously announced the release indirectly in discussions with the US special ambassador John Coale in Minsk. He is not interested in keeping these people behind grids. If Trump wanted to have it, he was ready to “complete a large deal,” said the 71-year-old, who has been in power in Belarus (formerly Belarus) since 1994.
A number of foreigners among the released
According to the Wjasna civil rights center, ex-presidential candidate Nikolai Statkewitsch has also been released. Nothing is known about the release of the well -known oppositional Maria Kolesnikowa.
In 2020, after Lukaschenko once again been declared the winner in controversial elections, mass protests had occurred in Belarus. There was also criticism from abroad, and the EU has not recognized Lukashenko since then. In the end, the police stained the peaceful demonstrations bloody. A wave of arrests followed oppositional.
The exact consideration has so far been unclear, but the United States loosens the sanctions against Minsk, including against the state airline Belavia, and thaw again the frozen diplomatic relationships. After the meeting with Lukaschenko, Coale emphasized that Washington was interested in reopening a message in Minsk. The diplomat described the bilateral relationships as “good, but not excellent”. A lot could still be done to improve them.
Lukaschko, who is the closest ally of Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin, has been relying on the USA for months. He had already released several opposition figures in June after meeting with US dealers, including the well-known blogger Sergei Tachanowski. According to human rights organizations, there are still more than 1,000 political prisoners in Belarus.
