Chancellor Merz has described Russian penetration into the NATO airspace with drones as a “serious end to peace in all of Europe”. Now the federal government is reacting to it.
In response to the injuries to Polish airspace by Russian drones, Germany strengthens its participation in the protection of the NATO East border. The monitoring of airspace via Poland by German fighter jets is extended and extended, as government spokesman Stefan Kornelius announced.
The number of fighter jets is doubled from two to four
The Bundeswehr is already in use with two Eurofighter fighter jets on Poland stationed in Rostock-Laage. The Ministry of Defense said that the number of planes will now be doubled to four. In addition, the operation, which has so far only been planned until September 30th, will initially be extended until December 31.
Kornelius added that the federal government would also intensify its support for Ukraine. He did not give details about this. In the EU, Germany will work on a quick adoption of a “robust 19th sanction package” in order to further put Russia under pressure.
Merz sees “serious danger to peace in all of Europe”
Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) had already stated on Wednesday that he did not consider the violation of Polish airspace to be an oversight. In these incidents he sees “a very serious end to peace in all of Europe”. The NATO air defense worked, but not as good as it should have worked. “This will trigger discussions in NATO. Of course, this will also trigger discussions in the European Union.”
