Berlin’s southeast has electricity again

Tens of thousands of Berliners could not turn on the light for days, did not use the stove, not on the phone with the cell phone. Now the large -scale power failure in the southeast of Berlin has ended.

The large -scale power failure in Berlin after an extremist arson attack has ended. After around 60 hours, all customers in the southeast of the capital are supplied again, as the network operator announced. According to the information, the power failure was the longest in at least 25 years.

At the last big blackout 2019 in Köpenick, more than 30,000 households were around 30 hours without electricity. This time, around 50,000 electricity customers have been affected by the accident since the night of Tuesday.

According to the BVG, tram traffic was resumed shortly after the current returned. Since around 5 p.m., the lines M17 and 63 could be on the entire route again.

The cause was an arson attack. The fire destroyed several thick power lines at the foot of two electricity pylons in Berlin-Johannisthal in the Treptow-Köpenick district. The fire brigade needed an hour to extinguish the fire alone.

According to the power grid, an interim solution has been built in the past two days: a connection of two lines near the electricity pylons damaged by the fire. The fire brigade, police and technical relief organization as well as the Treptow-Köpenick district were also in action.

Shopping centers and S-Bahn stations were also affected

S-Bahn stations, shopping centers, many individual shops and nursing homes were also affected by the power failure. Several schools remained closed on Wednesday.

Because the mobile network was weaker due to the lack of electricity and sometimes no longer even existed, it was only possible to make calls in parts of the southeast of Berlin to a limited extent. This also applied to emergency numbers 112 and 110. The repairs to the destroyed power cables began on Tuesday, but were time -consuming.

Confession letters on the Internet

According to the investigators, the arson attack goes to the left -wing extremist account. A letter of confession published on the Internet is assessed as authentic, said Berlin Senator Iris Spranger (SPD) in the House of Representatives. It is similar to a similar arson attack in February near the Tesla autofabrik in Brandenburg.

“We assume the group of perpetrators from the left -wing extremist spectrum,” said the interior senator. “So that means: not from abroad, but from domestic.” The perpetrators worked with high criminal energy and very professionally.
