Thuringia’s ex-short-term prime minister Thomas Kemmerich leaves the FDP. He was convinced that “my ideas of the future of our country and the content of the party have developed apart,” wrote the 60-year-old in a declaration of withdrawal to FDP boss Christian Dürr, which Kemmerich spread at X. Kemmerich confirmed the authenticity of the document, but initially did not want to comment on his step.

Thomas Kemmerich’s election fell into a crisis
Thomas Kemmerich gained nationwide awareness when on February 5, 2020, he was surprisingly elected with votes from the CDU, AfD and FDP as the Prime Minister of Thuringia. AfD votes were the decisive factor in the election. Kemmerich accepted the election, but was unable to form a government and did not appoint ministers.
Thuringia plunged into a deep government crisis at the time. After nationwide protests and internal parties, Kemmerich resigned at the time. Since then, his relationship with the Bundes-FDP has been considered burdened.
