Baerbock: “The Chancellor thought, did the woman go crazy?”

Annalena Baerbock has given her first major inaugural interview as the new president of the UN General Assembly. In it, the former Foreign Minister talks about her move to New York, her new role in the United Nations-and flashing about a relationship with US Foreign Minister Antony.

In March of this year, rumors arose, Baerbock and flashing would have a relationship, a few months after Baerbock’s separation from husband Daniel Holefleisch, both of whom had confirmed at the end of 2024. So far, the 44-year-old had hardly commented on these rumors about a possible new partner.

Baerbock is now reacting in conversation with the rumors of love with serenity, and thinks you could just laugh about that. Then she tells an anecdote about the moment when she learned about her supposed relationship with flashing:

“This message (…) reached me in the middle of a cabinet session. And I got several SMS from my press office and thought, okay, maybe I should look at what’s coming. And they sent me a screenshot of what should be in” Bunte “the next day. I had to laugh out loud. And of course everyone looked at me.”

Baerbock sums up: “I mean, the Chancellor (Olaf Scholz, editor’s note) was just moderating something on a completely different topic and thought, did the woman go crazy? And I read what the headline was, and even the Chancellor had to laugh a bit.”

She no longer reveals too much private privately in conversation. But then the reporter appeals to the immense criticism that Baerbock struck towards her Instagram videos from New York. The Greens politician had posted excerpts of her new everyday life on social media, steremated with the hinge of a taxi in high heels and the purchase of bagels and coffee. A staging that was reminiscent of “Sex and the City” and romantized life in New York City. Baerbock commented:

“I myself have to smile at films because a bit of self -irony always belongs to such videos. But I think in times of social media we experience all – not only as a politician, but also as parents – that we sometimes no longer achieve our children because they communicate very differently. Nobody has looked at my speech from the general assembly.”

These videos on social media are necessary to reach the younger target group and to inspire the UN, said Baerbock. Baerbock himself moved to New York with the two children together after the separation from her husband.

When asked about peace hopes in the Ukraine War and a possible blue helmet mission, their point of view is: If there is a peace treaty between Russia and Ukraine, UN blue helmets could permanently secure peace-provided that the majority of the UN member states are for this.

Her attitude to the war in Middle East is unchanged: there must be a two-state solution, so that both security for the state of Israel and a separate state is guaranteed for the Palestinians. Only this could be “the only way for permanent peace”, according to Baerbock.

Baerbock was cautious about her future after the mandate. It is only clear that she would not stay without a task. A candidacy for the office of UN Secretary General excluded her-there are fixed regional rotation rules.
