Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder has redesigned his cabinet. The post of Secretary General was also to be filled. Now the CSU board has voted.
Member of the Bundestag Stephan Mayer is the new Secretary General of the CSU.
As expected, the CSU board of directors spoke unanimously in a video link for the 40-year-old, who, at the suggestion of party leader Markus Söder, will succeed Secretary General Markus Blume. The German press agency learned this from the same group of participants.
The replacement of the important position in the CSU headquarters had become necessary after Söder had appointed Blume as the new Bavarian Minister of Science this week. In addition, the Executive Board appointed Tanja Schorer-Dremel, member of the state parliament, as the new Deputy General Secretary.
Mayer was State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of the Interior under Horst Seehofer. A few months ago he was elected Vice-President of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), but was unable to take office because he left the federal government not long enough ago.
In addition to the experience of 20 years in the Bundestag, Söder appreciates Mayer’s dealings with the media. In addition to the party leader, he should be the face of the party to the outside world, which wants to win as many votes as possible in the state elections next fall.
Mayer’s most important task now is to prepare the content and strategy of the 2023 election campaign. Mayer and Söder have known each other very well since their time together in the Junge Union (JU). The unmarried fully qualified lawyer Mayer has a classic CSU party career behind him – from the JU to the highest offices. In addition to his commitment to top-class sport, as Vice President of the Association of Expellees, he is also committed to the interests of expellees.
