The “Iron Beam” high-performance laser system marks a turning point: precisely, fast and surprisingly cheap. How does this change Israel’s protection against threats from hostile countries in the region?
According to the Department of Defense, Israel has successfully completed the construction of a laser defense weapon. Tests over several weeks would have shown that the system could reliably intercept missiles, mortar grenades, aircraft and drones in various use scenarios, the statement said.
The first systems should be included in Israeli air defense by the end of the year. The success of the development and test phase is a “decisive milestone” before the army system is handed over for operational use. The Israeli armaments companies Elbit Systems and Rafael were involved in the development.
Much cheaper than previous defense systems
“Iron Beam” (iron beam) is a ground-based laser air defense system that can quickly neutralize threats thanks to precise target technology and high efficiency and cause very low operating costs, it was also said in the message.
According to US, the cost-effective laser system can neutralize goals such as drones for about four dollars per use. The multi -stage missile defense system previously used by Israel is much more expensive. Prototypes of tactical short -haul lasers had already been used in the current war and had “intercepted dozens of threats”.
The Israeli Minister of Defense Israel Katz spoke of a “historical milestone” for Israel’s defensive capabilities. Israel is the first country to have such a system. “Our enemies from Gaza, Iran, Lebanon, Yemen and other regions should know: As strong as we are in defense, we are also so strong in attack – and we will do everything we can to protect the security of Israeli citizens,” he also said.
