Protest in France is on

Hundreds of thousands of thousands want to go on strike in France. There are first protests and arrests in the morning.

The first protests against savings plans began in France in the morning. There were several missions to dissolve blockages, said France’s managing Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau. Media reported, for example, blockades at bus depots and in front of secondary schools. Seven people were arrested in the Paris area, as the police said. According to French media, there have already been some dozens of arrests in other parts of the country.

A wide union alliance had called for the strikes. The unions are bothered by announced austerity measures of the now resigned government. The proposal was particularly criticized to delete two holidays. France’s new Premier Sébastien Lecornu announced not to implement this plan. However, there is also criticism of other savings plans from the previous government, which the unions criticize as brutal. The protest also exerts pressure on Lecornu, which advises on a new savings budget.

The authorities expect around 700,000 to 800,000 people to take part in the protest. According to the union, there should be a good 250 meetings nationwide.
