According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Moscow is ready for “high-level negotiations” with Ukraine. Shortly before, the Russian foreign minister had denied the democratic legitimacy of the Kiev government.
According to China, Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready for “high-level negotiations” with Ukraine. According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Putin said this in a telephone conversation with his counterpart Xi Jinping.
“Russia is ready to start high-level negotiations with Ukraine,” Putin said. Previously, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had personally approached Putin and suggested talks: “Let’s sit down at the negotiating table to stop people from dying.”
According to Chinese sources, Putin said the US and NATO had long ignored Russia’s legitimate security concerns. The Kremlin initially said nothing about the conversation with Xi. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, however, welcomed a new offer of talks from Zelensky and announced an analysis.
Zelenskyy: The main goal is “security of our citizens”
Selenskyj had already made an offer to talk to Putin on Thursday night – shortly before the start of the attack – to avert a war.
He said: «The security of Ukraine is linked to the security of its neighbors. So today we have to talk about security across Europe. This is our main goal – peace in Ukraine and safety of our citizens. We are ready to talk to everyone, including you. In different formats and at any location.»
China insists on negotiations
Xi Jinping pointed out that the situation in eastern Ukraine has “changed dramatically” recently, which has attracted great attention from the international community. “We should abandon the Cold War mentality and give importance to the legitimate security concerns of all countries,” the Chinese president said.
A balanced, effective and sustainable European security mechanism must be negotiated. China supported Russia and Ukraine to resolve the issue through negotiations.
Lavrov denies Ukraine’s government legitimacy
Shortly before it became known that Russia was apparently ready for talks with Selensky, the Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov had denied the democratic legitimacy of the elected Ukrainian government. “We see no possibility of recognizing as democratic a government that oppresses its own people and uses genocidal methods,” he said in Moscow, according to the Interfax agency.
“No one will occupy Ukraine,” Lavrov claimed. “The purpose of the operation was openly stated: demilitarization and denazification.” The Kremlin has been claiming for years that “fascists” controlled from abroad staged a coup in Kiev in 2014.
Lavrov assured: “We are interested in the fact that the Ukrainian people are independent, have a government that represents their full diversity.” Once the “democratic order” has been restored, the situation will allow negotiations again.
