Charlie-Kirk murder: Democrats are concerned about freedom of expression

The murder of Charlie Kirk shakes the USA and also divides the political camps there. Now politicians from the Democratic Party have announced that they have draft law to protect freedom of expression. The assassination attempt on the Christian conservative podcaster last week was a “national tragedy” that should have been an opportunity for President Donald Trump to have this country, “said Senator Chris Murphy on Thursday at a press conference in Washington.

However, the president and his followers used this tragedy “to destroy Donald Trump’s political opponents,” said Murphy. As an example, he cited the late night show by Jimmy Kimmel, which the broadcaster ABC had dropped indefinitely the day before.

Kimmel had accused Trump’s Make-America Great Again movement (makes America great again) in his show to instrumentalize the murder of the ultra-right activist Charlie Kirk politically. “This is censorship. This is state voice control. This is not America,” said Murphy.

The planned draft law creates a “specific defense for those who are targeted for political reasons,” he continued. It has “real consequences for government officials if they use the government’s power to take action against statements that are protected by the first constitutional additive.” Among other things, the first constitutional addiction protects freedom of expression.

The minority leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, accused the Trump government of “trying” to “wipe out” freedom of expression. “You don’t want people to speak if you don’t like what you say,” said Schumer and warned: “This is the way to autocracy.”

The Democrats are in both congress chambers in the minority.
