The Kremlin does not have accounts in the UK – thus, on February 25, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, commented on the London sanctions imposed on the Russian authorities.
Earlier in the day, the British government announced restrictive measures against Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Restrictions involve freezing accounts, Reuters reported.
“Neither Putin nor Lavrov has accounts in Britain or anywhere abroad. Maybe the government of the Kingdom did not freeze, but froze something? ”, The diplomat emphasized in her Telegram channel.
Zakharova stressed that the restrictions against the Russian leader and the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry indicate “the impotence of the Western countries.”
On Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation also announced the senselessness and futility of threats of sanctions from London in terms of the stated goal – to restrain the development of Russia. The department noted that in recent years, the British authorities have deliberately, under various pretexts, destroyed the foundations of relations with the Russian Federation, carried out purposeful work to curtail ties in almost all areas and escalated tensions in international structures.
On February 24, British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss announced that London was aiming to inflict damage on the Russian economy of the Russian Federation. On the same day, Boris Johnson announced new sanctions against Russia. The country will freeze the assets of all major Russian banks with an immediate freeze on VTB’s assets.
This is how Britain reacted to the statement of Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24 that a special operation would be carried out in the Donbass in order to protect the civilian population.
On February 21, the Russian leader signed decrees recognizing the independence of the Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republics (LNR and DNR). Also, the President of the Russian Federation and the heads of both republics Leonid Pasechnik and Denis Pushilin signed agreements on friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance. The documents were ratified the next day by both the republics themselves and the Russian State Duma.
The situation in Donbass escalated on February 17. The DPR and LPR reported heavy shelling by Ukrainian security forces, including from heavy weapons. The republics announced a general mobilization and evacuation of civilians to the territory of Russia.
Since 2014, the Kiev authorities have been conducting a military operation against the inhabitants of Donbass, who refused to recognize the results of the coup d’état and the new government in Ukraine. At the same time, Kyiv blames Moscow for the current situation. Russia has repeatedly stated that it is not a party to the conflict.
