For weeks, the US military has been shooting ships that are supposed to bring drugs to the United States. According to the UN observers, the attacks violate international law.
According to President Donald Trump, the US military killed three people in an attack on a presumably loaded boat. The boat was on a “well -known drug trade route” south of the United States, “to poison Americans,” wrote the Republican on his Truth Social platform. He posted a video to show the attack. It was initially unclear whether it was a new attack or just about details about an attack that Trump had reported a few days ago – without video and details on the more detailed circumstances.
A spokesman for the US Department of Defense said when asked that the Pentagon would not provide any further information about the president’s post.
According to Trump, the boat was related to a “terrorist association”. But he did not name a group by name. He also wrote that the boat was found in international waters, for which Southcom was responsible- the regional command of the US forces for Central and South America and the Caribbean. On which legal basis the military surgery took place, as in similar cases, it is unclear.
Donald Trump speaks of three ships
According to Trump’s information, the USA had already attacked boats in the Caribbean and put out of action. Eleven people were killed in the first attack, the second there were three dead. Trump had also reported on these two attacks at Truth Social.
On Tuesday, he said in front of reporters that the United States “switched off” a total of three ships, not two. The latest post on Truth now opened the attack on which attack Trump referred to. While he had referred to Venezuela in connection with the first attacks, he did not name a country this time.
Criticism of US military missions in Caribbean
In the course of the US attacks, the conflict between the United States and Venezuela tightened. The government in Washington justifies the missions with the fact that drugs are intercepted on the way to the USA. UN human rights observers, on the other hand, condemn the fatal attacks.
“International law does not allow governments to simply murder alleged drug dealers,” emphasized the experts working on behalf of the UN Human Rights Council. The United States also violated international maritime law and possibly also the UN charta, which forbid violence against other countries.
The independent experts referred to the first US attacks on alleged drug ships. The United States would have to be responsible for the “murders” “no matter how high -ranking it is in the government,” they said.
Venezuela’s judiciary speaks of murdered fishermen
In Venezuela, Attorney General Tarek William Saab called for a thorough investigation of the US attacks by the UN. The use of rockets for the “standard murder” of defenseless fishermen in small boats is a crime against humanity, he said.
US government officials have confirmed the relocation of several warships in front of the Venezuelan Caribbean coast compared to several media-they should intercept drug smugglers there. Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro described the US military presence in the Caribbean as the “biggest threat” in a century.
