The election committee of the Bundestag proposed the lawyer Sigrid Emmenegger nominated by the SPD as a candidate for the Federal Constitutional Court. According to information from participant circles, Emmenegger received the necessary two -thirds majority at a meeting of the committee. She is currently a judge at the Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig.

However, the recommendation of the committee is only one step on the way to the highest German court in Karlsruhe. On Thursday, the Bundestag, according to plans of the Union and the SPD, is to vote on the occupation of three judges’ posts at the Federal Constitutional Court. For the necessary two -thirds majority, the coalition then needs voices from the Greens and Left if it does not want to be dependent on the AfD.

Even before the parliamentary summer break, the judge election committee had approved Ann-Katrin Kaufhold and Günter Spinner’s candidates. The Jura professor Kaufhold was proposed by the SPD, spinner from the Union and from all current constitutional judges.

Due to massive resistance in the Union faction against the Jura Professor Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf, which was originally proposed by the SPD, the planned votes on the three suggestions for the Federal Constitutional Court had been taken from the agenda of the Bundestag in July.

The Greens Chairman, Felix Banaszak, described Emmenegger as a “good, respectable candidate”. The left faction in the Bundestag was also not heard about this candidate. However, it was criticized by politicians from the Left Party that the Union was not looking for a conversation with them about the candidacy of Spinner.

Group leader Heidi Reichinnek said that every member of the left faction could decide for the election on Thursday. The CDU has a party convention decision that excludes “coalitions and similar forms of cooperation with both the Left Party and the alternative for Germany”.

The deputy AfD federal chairman, Stephan Brandner, called Emmenegger “an unproblematic personnel” before the meeting. At the same time, he said that Kaufhold was unsuitable for the post in his view.

CSU state group leader Alexander Hoffmann was optimistic about the coordination in the plenary. «With the nomination of Ms. Emmenegger, the CDU/CSU and SPD candidate package for the highest German dish is complete. We are now promoting broad approval from the middle of the parliament and I am confident that this candidate package will achieve the necessary two-thirds majority on Thursday, »he said on the evening of the German Press Agency. “We are sending the clear signal: The Bundestag has the strength to protect the Federal Constitutional Court and strengthen them in terms of personnel.”
