Donald Trump is known for confrontative speeches in front of a large audience and rarely takes into account allies. Does he trigger new faults in the UN General Batte?
At the United Nations in New York, the general debate of heads of state and government begins on Tuesday (3 p.m. CEST). As one of the first speakers, US President Donald Trump wants to address the other representatives of the 193 UN member states. As part of his “America First” policy (America first), he had repeatedly criticized the UN course and reduced funds.
The Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, followed, follows Trump. The Federal Government is represented in New York by Federal Foreign Minister Johann WadePhul (CDU). The UN Security Council also deals with the Gaza War and the situation in Ukraine on Tuesday.
Un as a target for criticism – and as a stage
Trump considers the United Nations as a forum of the global community for the time, accuses them of political one -sidedness at the expense of the United States and puts the organization under pressure with drastic premium cuts. The United States has terminated the UN climate protection agreement under Trump.
In July, Foreign Minister Marco Rubio also announced the resignation from the UN Culture Organization UNESCO at the end of 2026 because their agenda “contradicts our ‘America First’ foreign policy”. Rubio saw a significant disruptive factor in the “highly problematic” decision of the UNESCO to allow the “state of Palestine” as a member state. From the perspective of the US government, this step has contributed to the distribution of anti-Israel rhetoric within the organization.
