Russian troops have been trying to conquer the city of Kupjansk in the northeast of Ukraine for months. Now Moscow has officially announced great successes – but there are doubts.
According to its own information, the Russian military has gained control of a large part of the competitive front city of Kupjansk in the Charkiw east of the East Ukrainian area. The Russian Army Group West is progressing when conquering Kupjansk, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced. “Of 8,667 buildings, 5,667 were taken under control,” says the widespread explanation. Kiev has not confirmed the progress of the Russians. Military observers have so far not found the alleged control of Russian units in the room.
Kupjansk is a strategically important city because of its location and various connections there. With the conquest of Kupjansk, the further advance into the depth of the Kharkiw area, for example to Isjum and Tschuhujiw, the Russian military outlined the further attack plans.
No confirmation of advancing
On the Ukrainian side, hard battles are granted for the city, but the urban area is largely under the control of the Ukrainian army, the general staff in Kiev said. The Ukrainian military blog “Deepstate” also characterizes the city as a large part of its own area.
Despite the fights, a good 800 civilians in the heavily destroyed city are said to endure. Before the war, Kupjansk had more than 26,000 inhabitants. The city was already under Russian control from the end of February to mid -September 2022.
