Despite record investments in clean energy: the world threatens to tear the self -contained climate target from Paris. Which countries are now under special pressure.
UN Secretary General António Guterres also sees positive developments in the fight against the climate crisis-for example during the energy transition. “We are at the beginning of a new energy era,” said Guterres at a meeting on the sidelines of the general debate of the UN General Assembly in New York. “We have to use this favorable time.”
He cited China and India as examples, the two most populous states. Both would have achieved some of their own goals for the expansion of renewable energies much earlier than planned. And: Last year, twice as much was invested in clean energy as in oil, gas and coal – despite enormous subsidies for these fossil fuels that distorted the markets.
The meeting in New York serves to prepare the World Climate Conference COP30 in Brazil in November. Countries are called to present updated climate protection plans by the end of the month at the latest.
Appeal to “dramatic emission cuts”
Guterres said that the current plans of all states would only reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to 2019 by only 2.6 percent-but 43 percent are necessary according to UN calculations. Now new plans for 2035, which continued much and make it much faster, with “dramatic emission cuts”.
The alliance of small island states, the members of which are existentially threatened by the rising sea level, warned the other UN countries of “betraying the weakest”. The ambassador Palaus at the United Nations, Ilana is, said: “The world observes attentively who takes the initiative and takes over the lead. In particular, we look at our friends in the European Union.” The EU had come under criticism because the state network was not traveled to New York due to internal discrepancies with a new, binding climate protection plan, but only with a little binding declaration of intent.
Already near the 1.5 degree mark
Nevertheless, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen promised in her speech that Europe would continue to pursue ambitious goals in climate protection. The EU will submit its official plan to the new climate boards before the World Climate Conference begins.
According to estimates by the world weather organization WMO, the earth has already heated up 1.3 to 1.4 degrees, compared to the underlying of 1850–1900. In view of the uncertainty areas, it cannot be ruled out that the 1.5-degree mark from the Paris climate protection agreement of 2015 has already been exceeded.
