China plans to massively lower greenhouse gas emissions by 2035
China is still one of the countries with the highest CO2 emissions. But that should change over the next ten years. The peak of air pollution has not yet been reached.
According to President XI Jinping, China wants to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by seven to ten percent by 2035. In a speech assigned by video at a climate event on the edge of the UN General Batte in New York, XI said on Wednesday that net greenhouse gas emissions should “be reduced by seven to ten percent in the entire Chinese economy”. It is still unclear when the peak was reached, but this could be the case this year.
China announces climate target
XI personally announced the internationally awaited climate target in his country. Beijing had never issued a short or medium-term goal, but only announced that he wanted to become climate-neutral by 2060 and to leave the maximum of greenhouse gas emissions before 2030. Thanks to the upswing of solar energy and electromobility, the People’s Republic seems to be able to achieve this goal in 2025.
According to the German development and environmental organization Germanwatch, it is “a qualitative turning point” in China’s climate policy.
