Ukraine war: Putin critic Garry Kasparov’s appeal to the world

Garry Kasparov, former Russian world chess champion in exile, has been a critic of Putin from the very beginning. In view of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, he published an impassioned appeal on Twitter.

Garry Kasparov used to be the world chess champion and one of Vladimir Putin’s first prominent critics after his career. He made some attempts to enter Russian politics in the 2000s. In August 2015 he declared: “As long as Putin is in the Kremlin, there is no chance for peace, because peace means the end of Putin’s power.” It wasn’t his only portent of this kind. Well, after Russia invaded Ukraine, to tear down all bridges to the country and isolate it completely.

“Wreck Putin’s War Machine”

“Ok, after years of ignoring my warnings, I’ve been hearing ‘Garry you were right’ all day today. I’m repeating what I said in 2014. So stop proving me right and listen to what I have to say.” With these words, the former chess genius introduces a four-part catalog of demands on how to deal with Russia:

“Support Ukraine’s military, with everything but troops. Ruin Putin’s war machine. Freeze and confiscate Russia’s funds. Kick Russia out of all international (financial) organizations. Recall all ambassadors from Russia. Talks make no sense. Shut down Putin’s global propaganda machine .Turn it off, close it, send everyone home.”

Kasparow also expressly mentions Gerhard Schröder. The ex-Chancellor of the SPD is a long-time confidante of Waldimir Putin and, among other things, heads the supervisory board of the controversial gas pipeline operator Nord Stream 2. Schröder has been heavily criticized for his close ties to Russia. After Ukraine’s attack, he wrote on the LinkedIn careers network: “The war and the associated suffering for the people of Ukraine must be ended as soon as possible. That is the responsibility of the Russian government.”

Kasparov versus Gerhard Schröder

Kasparov writes about the ex-chancellor: “Unmask and take action against Putin’s lackeys in the free world. If Schröder and his ilk continue to work for Putin, they’ll be taken to court…

Replaces Russian oil and gas. Put pressure on Opec, increase production, put Keystone back into service. We cannot save the planet if we don’t save the people on it. Remember, all of this will cost something. We’ve waited too long, the price is high, it’s only going to go up. It’s time to fight,” Kasparov said.

At the end of his appeal, the opposition figure, who now lives in exile in the US, also addresses the “5 Columns”: “The people who understand Putin, from the right and left in the EU, through Stalinists, old communists, Trump and his Republicans in the USA “You may have a right to support a brutal dictator as a way of criticizing Biden, but that’s repugnant and anti-American. Don’t forget that.”
