The East German countries want to benefit appropriately from the armaments orders. The Defense Minister travels to the Prime Minister Conference in Thuringia.
Before the meeting of East German Prime Minister with Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Thursday, Thuringia’s head of government Mario Voigt (both CDU) called for a greater commitment of the federal government in the new countries. “The Federal Government can still add up to its attention for the east of Germany,” said Voigt star. This applies, among other things, to the promotion of research and innovation. “We have modern research institutes that have been waiting for promises for far too long,” complained the Prime Minister.
Voigt also called for higher payments to the cities and counties for services on behalf of the federal government. “Our municipalities have massive burdens from social costs based on federal legislation,” he said. There must be a fair balance.
The Thuringian Prime Minister heads the East Minister Presidential Conference, which will meet at Schloss Ettersburg near Weimar from Thursday morning. In addition to Merz, Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is also expected.
East Germany wants a share of armaments orders
The SPD politician is likely to be faced with demands for more arms orders at the meeting. “We have strong industrial companies, for example in optics or robotics that have to contribute a lot when it comes to defensive ability,” said Voigt. “The federal government must pay more attention to this when awarding the order.”
The Saxon CDU Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer recently proposed an East Germany component in the allocation of armaments orders. The Federal Government is obliged here, since reunification, the defense industry in East Germany was almost completely broken down, he said.
Voigt argued similarly. “The east is historically disadvantaged at this point,” he said. “The more he has to be taken into account now.”
Decision requires support for civil defense
According to information from star the East Minister Presidential Conference wants to reaffirm the claim in a share in the federal defense expenditure by decision. In addition, the accelerated expansion of Defense-relevant traffic and energy infrastructure requires.
In addition, the so-called dual-use research, the results of which can be used both civil and militarily, is to be specifically supported in East Germany. The federal government is also asked to strengthen civil defense financially, personnel and organizationally in the east.
