Judge election: Jens Spahn and the principle of hope. The situation in the morning

It is astonishing how an almost silent process in the past could now become an almost state -bearing act: Today, the Bundestag should vote for three new judges for the Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe.

When the first ballot failed shortly before the parliamentary summer break, the coalition fell into a crisis. The Union’s parliamentary group, Jens Spahn, had the scheduled election canceled shortly before because he had underestimated the displeasure in his faction against one of the candidates, the lawyer Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf-and simply let the matter run for days.

Before the new attempt, at which Brosius-Gersdorf, but next to the labor judge Günter Spinner and the lawyer Ann-Katrin Kaufhold is now also to be elected administrative judge Sigrid Emmenegger, Spahn was confident. “Yes, it will work,” he said.

If he doesn’t deceive himself there. After all, the principle of hope does not make good politics. After the withdrawal of Brosius-Gersdorf, the coalition had the chance to professionally raise the procedure and ensure a democratic majority for the three candidates. Because a two-thirds majority is needed for the election, the Union and SPD are dependent on voices from the Greens and the left.

But both opposition parties are upset due to a lack of integration. The Greens have nevertheless asked their faction to choose the candidates – the state -political responsibility. It looks different with the left, because no one from the Union has spoken to the party. Here, because of your own incompatibility decision, which rejects cooperation with the left, you have sent the SPD. You can’t speak, but you want to vote? The displeasure on the left is rightly deep. So the Union willingly jeopardizes the judge’s election – for the second time.

Today the East German Prime Minister meet with Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Before the Eastern Minister of Minister at Ettersburg Castle near Weimar, Thuringia’s Prime Minister Mario Voigt demanded a greater commitment of the federal government in the new countries-and more arms orders.

“We have strong industrial companies, for example in optics or robotics that have to contribute a lot when it comes to defense ability,” said the CDU politician star. The federal government must pay more attention to this when awarding the order. “The east is historically disadvantaged at this point,” he said. “The more he has to be taken into account now.”
