Protection rate for asylum seekers in Germany decreased significantly

Media report
Protection rate for asylum seekers in the 1st half of the year decreased significantly

The number of recognized asylum applications has decreased. The number of lawsuits, on the other hand, has risen sharply. Meanwhile, criticism of the concept of the safe countries of origin is growing.

According to a report, fewer and fewer asylum seekers are given protection in Germany. In the first half of this year, the recognition quota dropped significantly to 26.5 percent, as the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” on Thursday, citing a response from the Federal Government, reported to a request from the left-wing member of the Bundestag Clara Bünger. In the corresponding periods of the past four years, the recognition rate was between 59 and 72 percent.

The number of judicial contestation of the decisions therefore increased significantly in the same period. With almost 90,900 new asylum lawsuits, there was more complaints in the first half of 2025 than in the entire year 2023.

Asylum in Germany: Criticism of the concept of safe countries of origin

From Bünger’s point of view, the numbers confirm the criticism of the concept of safe countries of origin. The associated accelerated procedures “often led to the fact that a need for protection is not recognized,” said the left-wing politician.

As can also be seen from the Federal Government’s response, the courts with around 52,000 asylum decisions in the first half of 2025 decided more and faster than in previous years. Almost 9,000 asylum seekers, initially rejected by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), received protection status in the first half of 2025 after a judicial decision or a new official examination.

“It would be naive to believe that there is no connection between the political climate and decision -making practice of the asylum authority,” said Bünger of “NOZ”. The left-wing politician pointed out that there are often significantly higher protection rates across the EU. Effective legal protection procedures are all the more important.
