Wolodymyr Selenskyj no longer wants to run as President of Ukraine – when the war has ended with Russia. He strives for new elections for an armistice.
The Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj wants to divorce with Russia after the end of the war. “If we end the war with the Russians, yes, then I am ready not to compete, because elections are not my goal,” said Selenskyj of the Axios news website in a video interview published on Thursday.
“I wanted to be with my country in a very difficult time, help my country. My goal is to end the war.” Selenskyj said that he would ask the Ukrainian parliament to organize elections as soon as a ceasefire was reached.
Survey: 34 percent of Ukrainians do not trust Wolodymyr Selenskyj
A presidential election scheduled for 2024 was suspended in accordance with war law, which was introduced in Ukraine after the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022.
The former comedian Selenskyj was elected head of state in 2019. As a result, Russia has repeatedly questioned Selenskyj’s legitimacy as President. During the more than three and a half years of war, Selenskyj has retained a high degree of public trust.
A survey carried out by the Kiev International Institute of Sociology in early September showed that around 59 percent of Ukrainians Selenskyj trust. Around 34 percent of those surveyed did not trust him.
