NATO looks powerless against Russian drones in its airspace. Security expert Christian Mölling says to Ukraine, but could soon get much bigger.
Drones about airports in Denmark and Norway, Shahed-Kamikaze swarms over Poland, airspace injuries from Baltic States to Romania: According to security experts Christian Mölling, the incidents of the past few days are only a prelude to further Russian provocations that NATO has to prepare in Europe. “We are coming to many questions that Russia forces us to answer,” says Mölling in the latest edition of the star– s “Die Lage -International”. “Perhaps Moscow will not only send three, like recently via Estonia, but 20 fighter jets at once. We have to expect that the synchronicity of events in the NATO airspace-whether drones or airplanes-will increase.”
Russia has recently significantly expanded the production capacity for drones with a long range, according to the political scientist from the Brussels Think Tank European Policy Center. This is threatening for the European NATO countries, whose previous response to airspace injuries leaves a “image of powerlessness”. Russia’s new drone skills are even more critical for Ukraine. “You have to assume that waves of attack with 1000 to 2000 drones will be possible in the future,” said Mölling. It was foreseeable that such attacks would overwhelm the available air defense systems. “Ukraine is running for a really terrible autumn and winter.”
Drone fight: “Perforated airspace on both sides”
At the same time, Mölling expects Kiev to continue his own drone strokes against the Russian energy infrastructure. “We have a perforated airspace on both sides,” said the expert. For the Russian leadership, your own inability to prevent Ukrainian drone attacks on the problem. Obviously, 30 percent of the Russian refinery capacity as a result of Ukrainian attacks have been canceled, with negative consequences for the financial resources of the Kremlin.
According to the security expert, the escalating conflict with Russia means that the interests of Europe and Ukraine are increasingly approaching. “Now you can see how much the security of Ukraine is connected with NATO’s security. Exactly the Russian drones that have actually been made for use against Ukraine are now appearing in the NATO airspace,” said Mölling. Europeans should now ask themselves how to support Ukraine in their efforts to attack the Russian drone factories. Because: “We have our own interest in the fact that these production facilities are neutralized.”
